The challenge
The BC Children’s and BC Women’s Redevelopment Project engaged Switchboard to address a number of challenges. They wanted to do something to bring together their stakeholders — inpatients, outpatients, families and staff from each of their campuses, as well as the community at large. Awareness and understanding of the expansion project were low, and project construction was a source of inconvenience and frustration for many hospital visitors, patients and staff.
The solution
Switchboard needed to reframe the story around the Teck Acute Care Centre: to make it a source of celebration rather than frustration — and to garner media attention and increase public awareness in the process. To do that, Switchboard planned, promoted and executed an event for hospital inpatients and outpatients and for the community at large. The event was used to announce the children who won a contest to name the three construction cranes, which were lit up with festive lights at the event. More importantly, the event allowed for various community and stakeholder groups to collide and connect in a positive atmosphere.
The results
The event was a resounding success. Attendance exceeded expectations; Global News attended and covered the event. Switchboard’s social media coverage leading up to and during the event led to a 40 percent increase in Facebook and Twitter followers. The story was also the most clicked on in the hospital’s internal newsletter for December.
